Plymouth is a beautiful place to visit, and the region offers travellers many sightseeing attractions. Here are five great holiday ideas, aside from the obvious attractions of the seaside, to make your time in Plymouth extra special.  1. Plymouth Festivals - The festivals and events held in Plymouth draw a lot of visitors to this city. If you enjoy soaking up local culture or love shopping, you could time your visit to coincide with one of the interesting events held here, such as the Fair Trade Market at Frankfort Gate in April, which offers a wide variety of crafted goods from around the globe. The Christmas markets in November and the Plymouth Folk Festival in June are interesting and children are sure to enjoy the Easter Fairground Rides in the city centre which are arranged in April every year.

2. Shopping – Visitors who enjoy shopping while on holiday will appreciate the fascinating little shops in the Barbican area. There are antique shops and art galleries to explore, and tourists can buy different kinds of interesting souvenirs. A massive new shopping mall has also been built at Drake's Circus and attracts shoppers from around Devon.

3. Architecture and History - The Barbican area also boasts a rich history and tourists will find that it is well worth spending time exploring the area looking at Jacobean and Elizabethan buildings. Tourists will also be able to visit the harbour which saw the departure to America of the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620. This is a popular area in the summer months and is highly recommended.

4. National Marine Aquarium – Children and adults are sure to enjoy a trip to National Marine Aquarium which is open every day between 10 am and 5 pm in winter, and between 10 am and 6 pm in summer. The aquarium is located is on the Barbican and the area in itself is a place certainly worth visiting with great historical significance to this area and Sir Francis Drake.

5. Leisure and Entertainment - Tourists looking for leisure and entertainment will enjoy the many movie theatres, casinos, bars and clubs in the region. At the Barbican Leisure Centre or the Plymouth Pavilions Leisure Centre, you will find fitness facilities, games and movies on offer. These are great options for keeping children busy and happy during your holiday. The Pavilions house a large swimming, bowling alley and sites right on the edge of the city centre.
